We had a great turnout for the Festival of the Arts this year. Parents and students alike supported the event by participating in the silent auction of 11 collaborative artworks. We raised $515 through the auction. The proceeds will be donated to The Food Bank Singapore. These photos show how hard the students worked . They hit many of the Approaches to Learning(ATLs )as they worked collaboratively on their class projects. We are very proud of our effort and contribution in making it possible to put food on the tables for families who need it.

How a Grade 4 tree made of Loose Parts turned into a learning tree for K2 with the addition of animals, soil and new plants.
Exploring habitats at Kent Ridge Park with Grade 2 teachers
An important way to collaborate and find Visual Arts connections with units of inquiry is to plan together as a team. Our reconnaissance trip to Kent Ridge Park to explore various habitats that grade 2 students could inquire into for their next unit was a productive one. This lush green part of Singapore had ponds, rainforest, tree canopy and lots of decomposing forest logs and leaf litter that make for good inquiries. Waterhens, forest bird, lizards and butterflies were very much in evidence here. Looking forward to making some keen observations and inquiring into sketching and painting techniques with grade 2 students. Perhaps Monet inspirations!

COLOUR THEORY : How it spirals across the elementary program. Central Idea: Colours can be described by their hues, value and intensity.
Colour is an integral part of Visual Arts. It is one of the elements of Art that students have a good understanding, experience and knowledge of. The inquiry into how the Colour Theory works and ways in which artists and individuals apply it form a major part of our inquiry and exploration. Through our lines of inquiry and by integrating Visual Arts into the units of inquiry, we make the connections between colour and its application across various disciplines.
What a lot of fun wet day playtime can be!
INTERNATIONAL DAY 2017
Nature Art at play time by Esther and Olivia.
Welcome to the ISS Elementary School Art and Design blog.
In the Primary Years Programme(PYP) we believe that Visual Arts is an integral part of the programme. Through the arts, students construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them(PYP, IBO, 2009). They engage and experiment in a continual cycle of action and reflection during creative experiences.
I hope to able to share with you the creative processes our students engage in as they explore the elements and principles of art and design. Please click on you child’s class tab to see all the exciting work we are engaged in.
Some of our work will be integrated into class units of inquiry while our stand-alone units will focus on the ELEMENTS and PRINCIPLES of Art and Design.
In the first week back at school, we discussed the 4 Bes and what they will mean in the Art Studio.
The students were introduced to Sketch Books and how they will be using them during the course of the year. I am excited to see some wonderful ideas emerging.
